I’ve long considered putting up a shelter and some protective fencing to house a pair or couple pair of backyard chickens. And I’ve followed the backyard chicken movement in my area and perked up when I’d hear of chicken adventures from a handful of neighbors who’ve tried their hands at urban chicken keeping.
But my friends with chickens are few and far between. So imagine my surprise when, while flipping through the holiday Williams-Sonoma catalog, I spied this “rustic” backyard chicken coop.
The ad promotes a coop that “combines modern green construction with the rustic appeal of an old barn.”
It sells for a $399.95. But wait…for another $350, you can get one with the white chicken painted on the side.
I’m glad to see backyard chickens gaining wider acceptance, though I’m not sure how I feel yet about a $750 coop.

That had better be a portrait of my own chicken for $350! –Jen

I can't believe you'd consider paying extra for the pre-painted chicken when the little blonde artist in your house would happily do it for free–and better than that one!

I say go for it!
