Scaring Up Fall at the Morton Arboretum

Seems somewhat unbelievable, but today was my first visit to the Morton Arboretum. Unbelievable because it’s a fantastic, family-friendly gardens and it’s only about 10 miles from my house.

I can’t believe we haven’t been there before. We’ll certainly be back when the weather’s as good as it was today.

Indeed, we picked a perfect time to go to be enchanted with the place. Today is the first day of the arboretum’s fall festival. The kids, who am I kidding, all of us enjoyed the scarecrow hunt.

There were some excellent scarecrows, very creative, but I’m thinking Hannah Bloomtana/Miley Cypress and Sally Solution (a tribute to alternative energy) topped my list.

We were there for more than three hours and didn’t even put a dent in the trail map.

We spent most of the time in the Children’s Garden and enjoying festival activities, including organic wine tasting, painting with sunflowers and eating the best taffy apple I’ve ever had…a fresh crisp apple smothered in caramel, then topped with crushed M&Ms.

We were too pooped to stick around for Marty Casey, the one-hit-wonder Rock Star INXS runner up who apparently now makes jewelry to supplement his music career. In this YouTube video he strings a few chords from his song “Trees.”

  1. What fun! We must come and go back with you. My boys really want to go to the Legoland in the Chicago area too. I love autumn. Oh I could just taste the carmel apples and all….
