Bailing Out

We got home three hours ago and I’ve just finished bailing out my laundry room, which was ankle deep and about ready to crest into the more important (read, messier) part of our basement.

When I heard about Hurricane Ike barreling toward Galveston Bay, I had no idea we could get as much rain (minus the devastating gale-force winds and threat of storm surge) in Chicagoland. Turns out, we could. And we did. I’m hearing 8-12 inches depending on where you are in the area.

Volunteers are sandbagging in the Albany Park neighborhood and I just heard that parts of Munster, Ind., are evacuating too.

We were at The Farm during most of the storm. I’ll blog about that later. But we took down our camp and headed home as soon as we saw the weather radar showing us that Ike had set its sights on Illinois.

We made it back in the nick of time. High water on the interstates was already causing closings and even longer stretches have been closed since we’ve been back. We got a little creative getting home, navigating higher ground through Gary and finding a place we could get onto the Toll Road without having to run a blockade.

Now I’m tired.

Photo is of Cline Ave. This by far is the deepest water I’ve had to drive through. Photo credit to the iFarmer, though the pic was taken on a BlackBerry.
