Introducing Your Noisy Hens to the Joneses

Because my SoCal sister is thinking seriously about getting some backyard chickens and because I live vicariously through others (hence the name VFG), I’ve been catching up on my Urban Chicken reading.

This post “Our noisy urban chickens get busted” is one every prospective backyard chicken owner should read.

Not only do backyard chicken owners have to be sure they are in compliance with local codes, they need to be on good terms with their neighbors.

Case in point, my sister was asked to sign a petition to rid her neighborhood of a noisy rooster…which was clearly a code violation. Most cities that allow backyard chickens, limit the flocks to hens.

She declined to sign because the petitioner never even bothered to approach the offending neighbor.

If anyone has examples of how they won their neighbors over, I’d love for you to share in the comments.

Did you warn your neighbors in advance? Did you offer a bribe, to share extra eggs from time to time? What type of neighbor education is required to get your backyard flock settled?
