Dealing With a Freezer Disaster

I had to get a bit creative tonight with supper after I learned that the freezer door was left open and almost the entire lot in my just-filled upright was thawed.

So tonight it was gourmet all the way: salmon fillet with petite green beans topped with lemon and apple strudel for desert.

The kids lucked out at lunch and ended up with very large mint chocolate “milkshakes” since the alternative was to throw out the whole half gallon. They also got emergency kid meals for supper…so they think they hit the junk food jackpot.

I lucked out an had Trader Joe’s samosas for lunch. Yum. I love those veggie stuffed Indian pastries. I topped it with spicy relish and plum sauce.

The popsicles and pate didn’t make it. Not a big loss since no-one here seemed to like either. I refroze the pizzas and my TJ’s orange chicken. Am thinking those will be fine.

Tomorrow I have to figure out what to do with thawed out ground turkey and, um, a bunch of very large cow livers. They’re grass fed and locally grown and butchered (Central Indiana). But, I’m not a big liver fan. I may suck it up and make liver and onions for the iFarmer though. I know that was one of his favorite mom meals.

  1. Mmmm. I love liver and onions. I have never made it myself. I always ate it at Mom’s or I order it off a menu when out. My first grade teacher told us one day that liver was good for you. I went home that day and mom made it for supper. (Perhaps it was a set up). I loved it from that moment forward. Of course now there is debate about whether it is really good for you. I am sure it must not be good for you because I love it. Most of what I love is not good for you. The boys would have loved the mint chip milkshakes. ifarmernephew2 had three bowls (small) thoughout the day today and ifarmernephew1 had one bowl. I am trying to talk dear husband into an upright freezer with no success. He says we don’t have room for it. Anyway. Enjoy your freezer fiasco feast.

  2. OH NO!When that happened to us…Rick came up with the idea to get a kidproof Fridge lock. Now we always stop to make sure we snapped that and have had NO freezer trauma for 5 years. Still could fail us but gives us one more cause for pause.Love the meal descriptions. An idea…You can brown the turkey and refreeze if you do not want to use it now.good work farmgirl.Omi would be proud.I for one would rather eat nothing than eat liver so I am with you!
