Day 4: Waterlogged

I’ve learned a couple things about my kids on this vacation.

No. 1, my daughter could spend the whole day, I mean hours and hours, digging a hole in the sand or wading in 2 feet of water.

No. 2, my son could spend the entire day trying to teach himself to body surf on small boat-generated waves or float on his own in a pool and perfect his dog paddle.

But neither of them has an interest in going to a farmers market or go cherry picking. They’ll have no choice, weather permitting, tomorrow.

They give us a break from the water park to let us go wine tasting today, checking out some of the Leelanau wines. We were surprised to learn that cherry wine isn’t necessarily sweet. It can be surprisingly dry, with obvious fruity undertones. Very nice.

Our local lunch spot was Scott’s Harbor Grill. The chef tries to keep local ingredients on the menu when possible. Our fruit sides were perfectly ripe, locally grown black cherries and my blackened whitefish was pulled from Lake Michigan.

My other tourist moment, besides breathtaking bay views on our drive up Hwy 22, was a quick visit for provisions to the largest Meijer in the world. Seriously, that’s what one of the customer service folks told me. It’s enormous and sells a surprising amount of locally grown produce, all clearly labeled.
