This morning we were reading in the Indy Star that residents were rattled last night by a loud boom that shook houses and left fire streaks in the air.
Speculation ranged from an airplane crash, UFO sighting and meteorite shower. The comments section in the paper even included offers to anyone who could recover space materials. And there was one theory that the boom was caused by space rubble hitting ground.
But it turns out…it was a plane. In fact, it was an F-16 National Guard trainee who “mistakenly” accelerated too quickly and caused a sonic boom. And the flashes of light? Yep, the F-16 was responsible for that too.
The Star notes: “The F-16 chaff flares and looks like a fireball – and are meant to emit a heat signature. They burn up in the atmosphere.”
Eyewitness reports seeing jet fighters with two engines. F-16’s only have one jet engine. Fighter jet flares are usually red and you can see them slowly drop to the ground. These were white and were clearly not falling but rotating horizontally. Flares cannot float in the air and don’t move side-to-side. I believe they were UFO’s(as also do most of the eyewitnesses) and the sonic boom was the f-15’s(with two engines) scrambling after the ufo’s.

Several years ago (around 2003), I reported a UFO sighting in Lafayette, Indiana – around the same military operations area and it was also dismissed as flares dropped by a military aircraft. As a pilot, I know they weren’t flares… there is something weird going on in that area.

It is clearly told that a disk like object would make a louder sonic boom then a f-16. The residents of Kokamo that were eyewitness’ said that they heard a much louder boom then a f-16 which seems believable since they live so close to an airforce base (dustin airforce base). So nothing tells me that this was nothing other than an UFO.

I heard about the Kokomo sightings on UFO Hunters. Those guys are a bit silly. If you saw ‘it’, check this out. It explains almost all of the reports of what the object looked like (like a tower in the sky with reflective tiles and a large orange fireball below it…only moving sideways not up like a rocket should). Its called the “Delta Clipper.” The project is said to have been retired, yet it was also considered one of NASAs most successful projects of the 90’s. My point is, if this experimental craft was so successful, was it really retired?http://www.hq.nasa.gov/pao/History/x-33/dc-xa.htmI would say this def solves the mystery. I would also say that a single stage space rocket has got to be incredibly LOUD.

also look at this video of the delta clipper experiment, is this what you saw? I think I may have actually solved a UFO case in 5 minutes ahaha I built a model rocket of this thing when I was a kid.http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-4749074158103458312

why would they send a trainee out at night over a residential area? to me it doesent add up.

It seems that every time one of these is sighted, the government reports that flight proceedures are being practiced. That is WAY to convinient. There has got to be something they can't understand.

It's has daily flights of Large Aircraft coming in, not fighter jets. The jets responsible for the mystery were from Fort Wayne. As a resident of Kokomo for over 20 years I can say that we don't hear sonic booms enough to be able to tell a difference. If you look at the tape closely, you can see the jet droping the flares. I seen it and could see the jet, most didn't look until they heard the boom. I was doing my astrology homework that night so I could see the jet clearly with my telescope.

I was in kokomo on this night, I was working in a liquor store when this incident took place. Actually the building shook so bad I made a coworker call 911 telling her I think something just hit the building. While she made her phone call I ran outside to look I circled the building in a clockwise manner and nothing was seen as I came to the third side of the building facing due west and running into my co worker, who had come outside. Now both facing west looking directly over the wendys restuarant was when i saw it with nothing to say but what the fuck is that? my coworker saying what myself not noticing the sighn blocking her view grabbed her shoilder and moved her about nine inches over. She still on the phone with the police, dropped to her and knees and started crying Saying Im scared, me still watching and waiting for this city block wide clockwise slowly rotating circle to disappear, so I can start to question my self on what I just saw. It seemed to linger almost as if injured and repairing itself, a good three minutes. And then with power and intent at about a sixty degree angle be gone into the upper atmosphere as quick as you could raise your arm. As far as jets yes I saw those hundreds of them trying to find this thing for hours after it happened. I asked a pilot I knew from oddly enough Gus Grissom afb. what the hell was that thing he just grinned and said hell man we still dont know. take it for what you will but if 911 calls are kept as record you will here me tell my coworker while she was on the phone dont be scared now, if its after us its too late terdunc7@aol.com for further comment

I agree with the above post. I was sitting at home preparing for a feildtrip for te next morning when i herd the loud boom. I jumped nearly out of my skin, my first thought was that somone had ran there car into our house. so i looked out the window to see if I could see anyhting. I looked up into the sky and what i saw were several different whie lights sparkling back and forth. I at first figured it was a plane or jet of some sort, but looking at it firther i relaized it was nothing like anything i had seen before. It was quite odd and i cant say what it was but it wasnt a man made aircraft. I went to sleep and shortly before is was time to wake up for school, i was waken up with my whole body shaking, being from kokomo indiana i had bever experienced an earthquake before, I mistook it for maybe a large truck in the alleyway or something, and monts later relaized it was an earthquake. I can just say thise events were strange and cant be explained away with manmade aircrafts and accidental sonic booms. ground zero where the boom was emitted from was five miles out of kokomo if it was a sonic boom it is said that it would sound like a close range fire arm beign fired. my question is if it was a sonic boom how did all of kokomo hear it and feel it if thats all its supposed to feel like and sound like?
