Et tu Vitamins?

Just a quick Corn Diary entry to note that if I was participating in King Corn’s Corn Challenge, I wouldn’t have been able to take my daily multivitamin. Corn starch is among the listed mass of ingredients.

Seriously, it might be easier to list the things I consume that aren’t touched by processed corn.

  1. The OCA organic consumers assoc. (http://www.organicconsumers.org), has been having a bunch of awareness focused on vitamins this year. They had a tidbit that said the chemically made (not food based) vitamins have been shown to actually be toxic and induce illness… They do go on. But vitamins are a supplement to our food source, which in the current age of food quality and consumption styles, one could really need. I don’t see many “USDA Organic” vitamins or that sort of thing, but I think it is coming and definitely a thing to consider when ingesting potent capsules of supposed benefit. I do try and find food based sources, Source Naturals and Rainbow Light are two brands that I like, but still, I just try to stay away from that stuff (I don’t vouch for their ingredients, just got used to them).(I must add that my muscles cramps and pains have diminished since I started cal, mag, potassium sups just last mo.) But I don’t know that I will buy more once the bottles are empty.

  2. Another thought that a newly pregnant friend of mine and I were having just last week… We agreed that prenatals and the heavy importance on vitamins during pregnancy were contributing factors to large hard to deliver babies. I felt that my first baby fell into this category and I refused to take often let alone regularly any with my 2nd. But I had to lie to my mother about it.We in no way said that good, balanced diet were not important, but that on top of that, vits were too much. We went on about on bad days, tired days, when meals were lacking supplements could be just that, but 4 2x/day etc… was over the top.Did you know that all bread (except if you can find local small home stuff) is used with “enriched flour”. What is it enriched with one might ask. I am not sure of all but folic acid is one. That is too ensure that pregnant low income (shall we call them) women are assured of that when ever they eat bread anywhere. (I only learned that last year post baby #2 otherwise I would have used it in a discussion with my mother, rather than outright lying).
