Before & After the Addition

There are three main parts of our farmhouse outside of Gas City. The first part is an 1849 log cabin, built with mature, likely 1600s, timber from the property.

House before the ’60s addition, probably the day of a Neher family reunion.

The second part is a two-story addition circa 1900 with a living room, dining area, and master bedroom downstairs. Upstairs there were two bedrooms and 9 closets, plus a large attic. Just like the cabin, the wood was cut and likely milled on property. All my life there was a root cellar serving as a basement.

House post-addition, probably late ’60s, early ’70s.

Then sometime in the 1960s, my grandparents added another addition, with a back bedroom overlooking the orchard (the Orchard Room) and a utility/mudroom.

Sorting through hundreds of slides over the weekend, I found two shots, one before the ’60s addition and one after. It’ll be fun to compare these to the finished remodel when the time comes.

Also interesting to see the trees on the property. I never remember the trees in the yard. Makes me want to plant more, though not so close to the house.
