Eating our way across North Carolina

Our annual trek to the beach, pretty much any beach will do, took us this year to North Carolina’s Outer Banks.

One of my favorite parts about visiting the South is the food. So much good food.

The Pit: We’re a barbeque loving family, so naturally we’re getting our fill, starting with The Pit in Raleigh. We’re glad we got there early. By the time we left, there was a line out the door. No surprise really. The food barbeque, especially the ribs and chopped pork, was great. So were the local brew choices. The fries and hushpuppies were really good too and I’m delighted that my son was impressed by the fried okra. “This is a vegetable?” he kept asking.

Old North State Winery & Brewery: For the evenings, I’ve been enjoying a Riesling from Old North State Winery & Brewery. Smooth and not-too-sweet.

Pigman’s Bar B Que: After a dip in the ocean, we settled into home away from home for the week and then dug into a spread from Pigman’s Bar B Que. Again, the ribs were pretty fantastic and the sauce unique, but good. I deviated a bit and tried the smoked tuna, which had the same seasoning as the pulled pork and a similar texture. It was surprisingly good. I wanted to like the cheese puff-like hushpuppies. But they were too dry for me to really enjoy.

Kill Devil’s Frozen Custard and Beach Fries: We topped our meal with pints to go from Kill Devil’s Frozen Custard & Beach Fries. This was really really good. We’ll definitely go back to try more of the menu. We opted for strawberry custard and vanilla (you can order a pint of mixed flavors). I was sorry that they’d run out of salted caramel. So I consoled myself with a Dreamsicle float…amazing.
