It’s official. A new Irving schoolyard is coming.
The District 97 school board voted Tuesday to break ground this summer on a new modern playground, multipurpose turf field and new, safer layout of the Irving schoolyard.
I wasn’t sure we’d see the day and, forgive me if I’m still a bit skeptical. I’ll withhold all-out celebration until the ribbon cutting.
It’s been a years-long project pushed forward by a very devoted group of parents. There are too many to name, but when I think of the project, I primarily think of a half-dozen of my neighbors and am in awe of their relentless pursuit of this necessary improvement for Southeast Oak Park and the elementary school, which leads the district in head injuries.

The yard sales, bake sale, community outreach, successful Irving garden, Ragnar relays and photo shoots played a large part in not only raising money for the project, but calling attention to the project and galvanizing community support. Even the governor stopped by for a visit.
My favorite part of all of this was how often this project was used as a teaching opportunity at the school. The students learned about gardening, healthy food, advocacy, solar power, physical fitness, and, well, patience.
The teachable moments will no doubt continue. So will outdoor play. Only by this time next year, Irving students will enjoy softer landings.
