It’s safe to say this project would have been better had it been colder. And it would have been prettier with some snow on the ground.
But even with temps in the 40s, we had a great time mixing up colors for a batch of ice marbles. Or, in our case, ice bowling balls.
We used medium-sized balloons and anywhere between 10 and 15 drops of food coloring to make these orbs.
Ideally, these would be made when it’s freezing outside, so that once the balloons are filled, they could be set outside to freeze. But with temperatures above 40 these last few days, there was no way these water balloons would freeze outside. So we put ours in the deep freeze. Even then, two of ours didn’t fully freeze after 48 hours…something I didn’t discover until one exploded in my dining room.
Not to worry, we filled the empty shell with, well ice shells of course.
It’s supposed to get much colder tomorrow and in the days after. So we may try this again and add a little color to the backyard.
A special thanks to Sarah Corbin from Chicago Parent for organizing this little community experiment.
