Cool Find: Virtual Graph Paper for Garden Planning

Today Hoosier Outsider asked me for a piece of graph paper. Amazingly, I actually have some. It’s leftover from college. Over the years I’ve used it a couple of times to plan changes to rooms or dream about home remodels. But what graph paper is really good for is planning a garden.

That’s why I absolutely love this application at PlanGarden.com. It’s not a freebie, though the developers let you test drive it for 45 days, just long enough to get you hooked. But the price isn’t bad…$36 for three years. A dollar a month to get reminders of when to start plants inside, when to transplant, how to organize your garden, etc.

For old hats and veteran farmgirls, this is probably unnecessary. But for those of us without the benefit of seeing our mothers, fathers, uncles, aunts and neighbors toiling in the soil, this is a nifty little virtual garden tool.

It’s probably not worth trying out for my tiny little backyard raised bed. But I may give it a spin and kick the tires next time I’m at The Farm. If I can load it with dial-up, I’ll pay for a subscription.

One of the fun parts about it is that the application allows you to track your garden with a widget for a blog or website. So…now I can track the progress of @WhiteHouseGardn, which is attempting to replicate the Obama family garden, but on opposite coasts, in Oregon.
