Movie Night Find: Mad City Chickens

Clearly it’s time for me to take a step back and examine my spending choices. I’ve been on a Peeps buying spree trying to come up with a good diorama this year. Unfortunately I end up eating my props and have to make repeat trips to Walgreen’s for more.

But before I rein in my finances, I may just have to splurge on one more thing, a new, quirky urban farming film: Mad City Chickens.

Seriously. It’s a full-featured (79 minutes) documentary about Madison, Wisc., urban chickens and the people who raise them. Got to be some characters in the mix. Otherwise, why turn on the camera?

Looks like the closest screening scheduled near me is April 22 in Milwaukee at the Spring Film Festival presented by the Outpost Natural Foods Cooperative. I’m thinking a mid-week trip to Milwaukee isn’t in the cards, so my next best option is to shell out $21.95 for the DVD.

And if I buy before tomorrow night by 11:59 p.m., I get a poster and a free pin. I’m a sucker for freebies.

BTW, if the freebies hadn’t sold me, I would have definitely hit the purchase button after reading this review in Capital Times, which provided “team coverage” of the documentary’s debut on April 4.

Here’s an excerpt:

Who knew a chicken could play the piano? Who knew a pack of chickens could work together like a street gang and get rid of an unwelcome rattlesnake? And who knew that a chicken named Consuela was such a survivor they could make a Lifetime movie about her life.

I’ll let you know how the film is when I get a chance to review it. I’ll be sure to have plenty of Peeps on hand for the screening.

Farmgirl straw hat tip to Urban Chickens.

  1. You have my interest “peep”ed, I mean peeked. he he. I’d like to see the DVD I think it sounds like the kids might like it too. I’ll bring the Resses Easter Eggs. Yummy!
