It was good to see a Twitter post today from one of our local reporters alerting me to an Oak Leaves story about what I hope will be a model food-to-table program at an area elementary school.
The Hatch Patch is in its second harvest at Hatch Elementary School in Oak Park. The students are learning lessons about how to plant, grow, maintain, harvest and compost. Then they get to eat the fruits of their labor. This year Cafe Winberie chef Charles Vales prepped their harvest feast.
And apparently, this year’s crop was so bountiful, that the students were able to donate 40 pounds of produce to the Oak Park-River Forest Food Pantry. So add sharing and giving to the lessons learned list.
