A reporter in West Virginia who was looking at changes in the ag industry picked the Grantham family as an example of how family farming has evolved over seven generations.
Over the past 230 years, the Grantham clan has gone from substance farming to exporting crops, then to near ruin from neglect and a resurgence thanks to a generation focused on a new trend, tenant farming.
The next group of Grantham’s picked dairy cattle as their focus, until maintaining the herd wasn’t profitable.
And now?
“Direct marketing is the future,” says Bill Grantham, who along with his Farmgirl wife, is growing produce to sell at market.
More good news for the Granthams is that the farmgirls next in line to take on Tudor Hall are also interested in the farm. What direction they take remains to be seen.
