Craftsmanship is Alive & Well in Brown County

My local find today is only local because it’s near where the iFarmer grew up and we’re in town for a birthday and family reunion.

For at least five years, we’ve had our sights set on a dining room table and chairs we ordered from one of our favorite Brown County artisan galleries.

I wish Peter Grants had a better website. Don’t spend too much time on it, you’ll only get frustrated. If you click on the furniture and lighting links, you can get an idea of the furniture styles…simple Prairie and Shaker designs, carefully crafted into finished tables, chairs, desks, etc.

We picked a distressed cherry table and chairs, sort of a farm set, without being too country. It’s a Shaker style and we love the simple lines and natural colors. We hope to take delivery and set up before Thanksgiving.

While the iFarmer closed the deal, I strolled through Nashville. If you skip by all the tourist trap items made in China, you can find some fantastic pieces by local potters, jewelers, weavers, woodworkers, metalworkers and the like.

My favorite finds today were in the Brown County Craft Gallery, especially the rugs and shawls woven by Chris Gustin. What I particularly like about Gustin is that she uses recycled upholstery remnants for her weaving. So she rescues what would otherwise be landfill waste and turns it into beautiful “shaggy chic” pieces.

I already have my eye on one rug…but I think I’ll wait until the sticker shock of today’s purchase wears off a bit.
